The vene team’s take on working remotely

By | Digital Marketing

The current situation with the COVID-19 pandemic forced thousands of people worldwide into a home office arrangement. When for some it can be an awesome way to get some alone time and finally get things done without distractions, others need to juggle work, family, kids’ homework and desperately trying to get toilet paper with no success (at least in Berlin). Don’t get us wrong, working from home every now and again can be great and is a luxury that our companies often afford us. But does it work long term?

We decided to get a sneak peek into how our vene team is coping with the lockdown, tips and tricks on staying productive and sane(!) and what they’re looking forward to when life comes back to normal again.

Jürgen, Head of Product, vene dash

  1. Do you have a morning or daily routine during quarantine/lockdown? Same as usual – my day won’t start without a hot coffee and a bit of exercise or stretching (some people call it yoga).
  2. How are you keeping yourself entertained? Well, working usually keeps me quite occupied. In the evening talking to friends and family as well as cooking, which has never been done this frequently in our kitchen (!), is what keeps me going.
  1. What is your biggest challenge during the lockdown? Not being able to meet family/friends and, of course, going climbing outdoors.
  1. How are you staying productive whilst working from home? Making a short plan for the day and catching up with all the team frequently to align activities and goals.
  1. What are you looking forward to when the lockdown is over? That is an easy one – go on a climbing trip and have a barbeque outside in the sun with friends.

Sumit, Customer Success Manager, vene dash

  1. Do you have a morning or daily routine during quarantine/lockdown? I keep the same morning routine as before. The only difference is, I use the commute time to read about the current affairs and check what is happening around the world.
  2. How are you keeping yourself entertained? I have made two new best friends during this time – YouTube and Netflix. I think I have watched so much content on YouTube over the last few weeks that by the time this quarantine is over I might be first person to finish watching all the content on YouTube, LOL. When I need some fresh air and the urge to see the outside world, I just go out for a drive.
  1. What is your biggest challenge during the lockdown? No big challenges so far. Minor inconveniences? Yes. But apart from that I feel we in Germany are still in a privileged position where we are not under a total lockdown like some other countries.
  1. How are you staying productive whilst working from home? Staying productive is easy when you are focused on the job at hand. I set myself daily targets with a deadline for each task. This helps me to keep track of the tasks I need to complete. If I find myself weary during any part of the day, I quickly do 15 pushups and I am active again.
  1. What are you looking forward to when the lockdown is over? Times like these have made me realize the importance of little things in life. I am looking forward to grabbing a drink with all my friends, spend an afternoon relaxing in a park and continue my quest to discover new restaurants every weekend.

Sven, Head of Customer Success Manager, vene overwatch

  1. Do you have a morning or daily routine during quarantine/lockdown? I get up at the same time as on usual workdays, but instead of taking the train to the office I go for a walk in the forest which is nearby. After I return home, I’m checking my calendar and all my to-dos and plan my day. Most of the days I also go for a walk during lunch break.
  2. How are you keeping yourself entertained? I try to reach out to one colleague per day to chat about non work-related topics, just to replace the small talk in the office hallway or kitchen.
  1. What is your biggest challenge during the lockdown? How to spend free time when you cannot visit friends & family. Also, it is harder to draw the line between work and private life because both is actually done at the same place now.
  1. How are you staying productive whilst working from home? As mentioned, first thing in the morning is that I’m planning my day with all meetings, calls and tasks that need to be done. Furthermore, I try to stay as close to colleagues as possible via MS Teams, Rocket Chat etc. to be able to still discuss topics on the short way. I ventilate the rooms frequently to keep the air fresh and I’m trying to get up from the chair from time to time just to not get rusty.
  1. What are you looking forward to when the lockdown is over? Finally meeting other people in person again.

Olena, Product Marketing, vene dash

  1. Do you have a morning or daily routine during quarantine/lockdown? Absolutely. My husband and I need to manage work with taking care of two little boys (2.5 and 5 y.o) as the kindergarten is closed. It would be impossible without a routine! I usually get up shortly before 6AM, do half an hour of sports (either just some yoga or a 20-30 min workout), make myself some coffee and start working at around 7AM. My husband then takes care of the kids till about 10 AM and we alternate. We continue like this all day till about 6.30PM – 7PM. Then it’s family time for all of us!
  2. How are you keeping yourself entertained? There’s no need to with such small kids – they’re an entertainment by itself, LOL! To make sure none of us goes insane, we go to the neighboring woods or river to look for beaver traces, to pick up sticks and stones, climb on trees, etc. every day. Our local ice cream shop is still open as well and offers ice cream to go – we treat ourselves a few times a week.
  1. What is your biggest challenge during the lockdown? Combining work, kids and household chores all within 24h.
  1. How are you staying productive whilst working from home? The only way to stay productive is to start early and be concentrated in the hours when it’s my turn to work. I guess the fact that I need to take 1-2 h breaks to be with the kids keeps me sane and productive.
  1. What are you looking forward to when the lockdown is over? Kids finally going to the kindergarten!!!

Roland, Head of Product, vene overwatch

  1. Do you have a morning or daily routine during quarantine/lockdown? Yes, a very detailed schedule especially for the kids, including washing, brushing teeth, cleaning up rooms (10 Items scheduled over the day). For myself have the same routine as working in the office.
  1. How are you keeping yourself entertained? A lot of garden work in the evening and weekend, seeing friends sequentially, or in the garden with a 2m of space between us.
  1. What is the biggest challenge during the lockdown? One-on-one talks! Just going over to someone and clarifying things 1-on-1. Also, written communication needs care so people don’t get you wrong.
  1. How are you staying productive whilst working from home? Same process as before, no change, but 20% more work.
  1. What are you looking forward to when the lockdown is over? Seeing friends in groups, have an even bigger summer party at our home.

Quim, Sales Manager, vene dash

  1. Do you have a morning or daily routine during quarantine/lockdown? I get up at 7AM every day, do 15 min of Zumba on YouTube, take a shower, have breakfast and starting at 8 AM hunt clients for vene dash.
  2. How are you keeping yourself entertained? All day long while I work with electronic music and in the evening when I have dinner, I listen to news and relax with Netflix.
  1. What is your biggest challenge during the lockdown? The biggest challenge is to have a routine and the most important thing is to have the discipline to keep it.
  1. How are you staying productive whilst working from home? I try to follow that routine and make the same schedule as at the office.
  1. What are you looking forward to when the lockdown is over? I hope I can go back to the office soon and be together with other people again.

Matthew, Junior Technical Product Manager, vene overwatch

  1. Do you have a morning or daily routine during quarantine/lockdown? Yes, I wake up every morning and have coffee and toast, take a shower and dress up like I am going to work, then try to work with no distractions for the rest of the morning.
  2. How are you keeping yourself entertained? Every evening I am watching a new foreign film, last night I watched Portrait of a Lady on Fire, a French movie set in the 18th century and it was really beautiful.
  1. What is your biggest challenge during the lockdown? Not hearing the sounds of other people. I really miss the little things like the hum of conversation, the sound of German on a phone call, or hearing a group of people laugh at a joke!
  1. How are you staying productive whilst working from home? Dressing up each day and trying to act like it is a typical work day is helping to keep me productive.
  1. What are you looking forward to when the lockdown is over? I’m looking forward to sitting in a crowded park with a beer under the sun 😊

This quarantine forced us to see life in a different light, appreciate the little things and adapt to a new way of working and living. No matter what each individual situation is, we believe this lockdown made us more agile and stronger as a team! We all are looking forward to normality and to be able to see each other in person again. In the meantime, we wish you a safe and sane lockdown!

What You Need to Know About Ad Fraud

By | Digital Marketing

What is ad fraud and how does it work?

The last ten plus years have seen of the rise of a new, and (seemingly) unstoppable, industry – digital advertising. In a world where mobile screens have all but substituted television ones, and tech savvy generations grow up in perfect symbioses with their phones, mobile marketing quickly became the most relevant medium to reach potential new users.

As of 2018, the digital ad space reached the $90 billion mark in the US alone, followed by China ($50), UK ($16), Japan ($13), and Germany ($8). These are staggering numbers for a business still in its teen years. Therefore, it is no surprise that such a fast, uncontrolled, and unruly upsurge of a brand-new business ecosystem, becomes the perfect environment for fraud. And if digital advertising in going through puberty, ad fraud is its growing pains.

But what exactly is ad fraud? At its most basic definition:

Ad fraud is a type of scam in which the perpetrator tricks advertisers into paying for something that is worthless to them, such as fake traffic, fake leads or misrepresented and ineffective ad placements.

Let us break this concept down and give you a few tips on how to prevent ad fraud in digital advertising.

What are the most common ad fraudulent practices?

Here’s a list of the most used forms of ad fraud. At the pace at which the industry is expanding, and new creative methods of fraud continue to pop up, it will be interesting to see how this list shifts in the near future.

Why is traffic fraud so menacing to my business?

Recent reports state that fraudulent practices comprise as much as one-third of all paid impressions. The colossal mobile in-app fraud scandal uncovered late last year serves as a reminder that ad fraud is at its prime and still evolving.

It’s a virtual certainty that the advertising market will never be without it, with an approximate $20 billion estimated to be lost to ad fraud a year.

With fraudsters coming up with new methods to fake clicks and installs on almost a daily basis, handling traffic fraud can be a daunting task. Channels and ad formats, such as mobile or video, are today’s new breeding grounds for fraudulent practices. The increase of programmatic buying (and the blind inventory available through RTB exchanges) has also propelled ad fraud to new heights.

It’s a virtual certainty that the advertising market will never be without it, with an approximate $20 billion estimated to be currently lost to ad fraud a year. This to say that, if ad fraud is not properly understood, detected, and avoided, it will harm your business, including brand reputation, viability and performance. Advertisers must stay on top of their games when it comes to awareness of existing fraud methods, as well as ways these can be mitigated.

What can I do to prevent fraud?

You might think that ad fraud will never affect you but it can truly affect anyone. From having millions invested in user acquisition campaigns, to just browsing the web – being online is all you need to be at risk. So, the more you know about fraud, the better you’ll be able to tackle it. To help you kick start your anti-fraud strategy, we enlist a few simple first steps that can be added to your advertising strategy to prevent fraud.

Pay attention to your running times

Bot fraud is more active during certain times of the day, such as from midnight to early morning, or during working times. Avoid peak time for bot activity to minimize their risk.

Constant Campaign optimization

Keep an on-going eye on your campaign performance to see where the best clicks are coming from and stop bad sources.

Use third-party monitoring

Prevent fraudsters from clicking in your ads by checking the traffic sent to your campaigns in real-time.

Select a bullet-proof ad fraud software

Another great way to minimize your exposure to fraud is by selecting an anti-fraud software that can help you detect and eliminate fraudulent practices.

Which fraud protection tool should I be using?

The industry experts at freenet digital have experienced every trick in the book applied by third parties trying to misuse our products and trick our customers. With a lack of software options being offered, we took matters into our own hands and built vene overwatch, a two-folded fraud protection solution.

Affiliate World Asia – Not Just Another Event

By | Digital Marketing, Events

When Affiliate World Asia first started, in 2015, it was the newcomer in an already overcrowded pool of affiliate marketing events. Was it worth attending? We sent one member of our team all the way from Berlin to Bangkok to check it out. By 2018, three years and three editions later, AWA has become one of the best events in the industry, and vene is proud to be an official sponsor.

Two reasons elevate AWA above other industry forums:

  • Reputation. It’s one of the events organized by Affiliate World Conferences, the best organized and attended affiliate events in the industry.
  • Location. Hosted in Bangkok, a vibrant and exotic Southeast Asia metropole with great weather in December. This makes AWA the perfect escape from the northern hemisphere this time of the year and gets everybody in just the right mood to make money.

Let us now break these two points down and dive into the main aspects that set AWA apart, making it the best place to boost your performance marketing profits.

The latest edition was attended by approx. 3000 people, with an audience made up mainly of affiliates, publishers, networks, and service providers. Throughout the main conference, there were several speeches held by super affiliates (the name given to top affiliates), CEOs and industry experts. These talks were full of business tips, insider knowledge and the fuel for three days of intense and productive networking.

The main topic for AWA 2018 was e-commerce, prompting an array of talks and activities connected to the topic. For instance, the day before the official start of the conference, the shecommerce event took place, with workshops and networking sessions fully dedicated to women in the ecommerce vertical. Two of our team members were among the female-only attendance, giving it rave reviews.

It was interesting to notice how the visitors interacted with the vene booth. There were the early birds, approaching the booth at the beginning of the day and a big wave of attendees showing up at the end (the last 2 hours) of every day. The middle of the day was usually reserved for the activities and speeches constantly taking place.

If the day wasn’t enough to connect with everybody you wanted to, fear not. Buzzing Bangkok doesn’t stop when the sun sets, nor does the AWA. In the evening, there were many events to choose from, such as an official cocktail party, and satellite parties hosted at the best clubs and rooftop bars in the city. This created plenty of legendary opportunities to network while having fun. Work hard, play hard.

It’s not just Bangkok and the VIP attendees’ list that contribute to the successful dynamic of AWA. The conference takes place, since its first edition, at the Centara Grand Hotel, a modern and well-located hotel with an optimal event floor. The halls are spacious yet cozy, with tons of sitting opportunities, making it effortless to connect with partners. And did we mention the business-making rooftop pool?

If it wasn’t clear by now, the vene team is a huge fan of the AWA. We always have a great time, connect with industry peers, and above all – make money. Drop us a line and meet us there next year, or in any other event across the globe, in 2019.

App Store Optimization (ASO): What Is It and How It Works

By | ASO, Digital Marketing

Since the birth of Google (and other mainstream search engines), marketers have found themselves in a sea a of new marketing styles, one of which being Search Engine Optimization. Nevertheless, the innovative digital landscape is evolving, and with over 2.9 million apps flooding on the play store (similar figures on the App Store), the dawn of a new era has arisen – the art of App Store Optimization (ASO).

We often hear people complaining that after heavily investing in the development of an app, it quickly vanishes from the app store upon release, being placed below all other apps in only a matter of weeks, even days. To tackle this problem, on November 3rd, 2009, an app developing genius named Mr. Johannes Borchardt introduced the world to the concept of app store optimization at a seminar held in Berlin. The concept behind app store optimization is to increase the visibility and engagement of an app and its interactions on the app store.

50% of people engaging with apps have been shown to invest time on the app, or play store, 1 or 2 times a week.

The breakthrough concept is quite simple in theory and the logic behind it is standard practice across most marketing plans, both online and offline. The more visibility and engagement you have with an audience the more likely they are to download or potentially purchase your product, service or app.

Now that we have the basis for the concept that is App Store Optimization, lets take a step forward and deep dive into its importance for marketers.

Why is ASO Important?

  • Search is the leading contributing factor of app discoveries and downloads. According to research, over 60% of apps are found by people searching for specific keywords on the app or play store.
  • Estimations from studies carried out by some of the world’s leading universities have shown the average person spends approximately 3.2 hours daily on their mobile phones and, of this time, 90% or more is spend on apps.
  • 50% of people engaging with apps have shown to invest time on the app or play store 1 or 2 times a week. This is enough reason to make sure your app is visible without any other necessary explanation.
  • Are you sure your app will be noticed on the app or play store? This is the number one question publishers and developers should keep on their minds, as studies point to the fact that 83% of apps are filtered out from the search results within one week of publishing. This means that, unless you utilize ASO techniques, your app will be invisible and most likely a waste of your investment.

By now you should understand that ASO is not just important, it is a necessity for the success of your app.  Let’s take a closer look at the fundamentals of how this technique works.

Key elements

  • It might sound obvious but, without being focused and accurate with keywords, it will be difficult to utilize ASO successfully. To break it down – you might know exactly what your app does and how it should be categorized but are you certain that you know the key terms that should be associated with it?
  • If the answer is no, do take the time to do a proper research using all the online tools at your disposal to make sure your keywords are on point for your targeted audience. Once you have these locked down, it is of the upmost importance to use them in the name and description of your app.
  • A clear example can be seen below. A search for war games shows this game on top, clearly displaying “war” in the title and “war games” in the first line of description.

app store optimization

App Logo
  • The logo has the same fundamental reason for being there throughout the history of marketing techniques and approaches.
  • A logo is a key identifier for your brand and gives an image association to your product or service.
  • In the app store environment, this is more important than ever as it is the key contributing factor to what is going to be noticed, regarding your application, when a potential consumer might interact with it.
  • Be sure that your logo is bright and visually stimulating and if possible relative to the industry.
  • Like with any product or service, the description of your application is your company’s opportunity to divulge to potential consumers exactly what the benefits of your application are and why they should use it.
  • Along with this, the description is a key component in you ASO strategy as it is an ideal way to add additional keywords.
  • Make sure that the USP of your application is stated in the description, even more than once, to enhance the consumers reason for download. Eg: Download Now For Free.
  • The screenshot of the application is your company’s opportunity to give the potential consumer the wow factor as this is where they have a change to get a sneak preview of how different pages of your application work. It is critical that the end user is provided with a correct and interactive preview.
  • The Uber application has been noted to be one of the top applications available on the market that invest heavily in this element.

In modern society, the idea of tried-and-tested is more important than ever and potential consumers are significantly more likely to download your application, and continue to use it, if they have seen its value for other users.

 Competitor Research
  • Like any business, your competitors are both your arch enemies and your best friends when discovering the best way to market your business or service.
  • The first thing to investigate from an AOS perspective is the type of keywords they are using. Once you have researched this, check the type of volumes these keywords have with keyword planning tools. If deemed applicable, and correctly audience targeted, copy these keywords to optimize your application. Remember to not copy the exact text being used, only the relative keywords from the context.
 User Reviews
  • In modern society, the idea of tried-and-tested is more important than ever and potential consumers are significantly more likely to download your application and continue to use it if they have seen its value for other users.
  • Simply put, reviews are the digital marketing concept of “word-of-mouth.” The reviews are also fundamental to understand your users’ needs and continuing to develop your application going forward. This is an innovative industry, you must be seen to be innovative at all times.
  • It has also been proved that just like any traffic source, the app stores consider reviews when displaying applications. For this reason, positive reviews are essential in maintaining market dominance.
 Application Size
  • Like the vast majority of digital products, the size of your application plays a strong contributing factor on whether your application will convert successfully on the app stores.
  • Always keep in mind that an application larger than 100 MB is much more difficult to download on 3G or 4G connection and usually requires Wi-Fi.  Make sure to optimize the size of your application and to generate a lighter version which can be downloaded on weaker network connection.

Trending Techniques For Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

By | Digital Marketing, SEO

What’s better than targeted audience traffic? FREE targeted audience traffic! That’s the reason why every company loves organic traffic.

The phenomenon of search engine optimization is nothing new to the ears of an experienced marketer, but the concept of SEO techniques sends a quiver down the spine of even the most advanced digital marketing professional as it is forever changing.

Spending hours, if not days, researching hundreds of articles and blogs to identify the magical perfect SEO strategy is nothing new in the marketing world. Unfortunately, the bubble needs to be burst as there is not a one-size-fits-all perfect strategy to shoot your organic rankings and traffic. But fear not! We researched and tested some key techniques proven to work for us and are willing to share these ingenious concepts with you.

It might sound obvious to any marketer that quality content plays a major role in any SEO strategy, but the question is – how do you write quality content and what exactly is quality content?

Quality content, in its most fundamental state, simply means how you can answer your potential and previous consumer’s queries. The best way to create this type of content is to put yourself in your potential customer’s shoes and imagine what kind of questions you would get, then answer them in a format that is easy to understand, while utilizing keywords that are relative to the topic. Always remember that maintaining users on your site for an extended period is a key indicator to Google that your content is useful. As Google’s main priority is to give advantageous rankings to companies with positive end-user engagement, you will see this significantly impacting your current ranking.

Google have publicly announced that if a site takes longer than 4 seconds to load, it will be significantly penalized within the algorithm ranking.

Site Speed

Site speed is essential to your ranking status and if your site it slow, the chances of you ranking high are slim to non-existent. Google have publicly announced that if a site takes longer than 4 seconds to load, it will be significantly penalized within the algorithm ranking.

We advise to check your website speed with online platforms like GT Metrix. If you find that your site loading is slow, there is no need to panic straight away as there are potentially many reasons for this. The Google Page Speed Insights tool gives fantastic insights to what could be the matter so that you can get started on fixing the issues.

Always keep in mind that the URL is the first point of contact your website has with the search engine. For this reason, it is essential to make it as relevant to Google and to the end-user as possible. You should also make it easy to understand where exactly the URL will take them and what it is about. And it is no surprise that doing thorough keyword research, plus adding these keywords to the URLs, is an excellent way to increase rankings. The SEO platform MOZ or the Google Keyword planner are excellent sources for this time of informative keyword research.

Tip: make sure the keyword is reflected in the first 3-4 words as Google places greater emphasis on these keywords. Along with this action, keep the URL structure simple and under 75 characters. Check out below a few examples of good vs bad URL structures.

Good – -Techniques-2018
Bad – -SEO-234-222

Avoid using alphanumeric numbers as these may be treated as spam URLs by Google.

Meta Data

As a marketer, you have probably heard of the never-ending debate on whether Meta Data affects your search engine ranking or not. Let us answer that question right now.

Meta data is a major part of any SEO plan and goes into the actual code of the site. For example, title tags, meta descriptions, or H1 & H2 tags, go into the HTML head. What is visual to the naked eye is in fact not visual to the search engine, as they only read the code. Since meta data is part of the code, it is a huge component of your ranking and should have a prompt position within your SEO strategy.

It’s crucial to write relevant and visibly attractive meta descriptions as it significantly increases click-through rates. It is also important to constantly maintain the relevant keywords in your meta descriptions, as this is precisely what the end-user initially sees on the search engine results page (SERPs).

Along with the insertion of keywords at the beginning of each meta description, it has also been proven to help if you numerically rank the meta descriptions and use a sensationalized vocabulary with terms like “best”, “review”, “latest, and “innovative”. Finally, don’t forget to date stamp the year. Increased click-through rates indicate to search engines that the content is relevant to the end-users. Thus, the search engines will reward your ranking.

Search engines are now focusing more on semantic searches, which are based on understanding the end-user’s intent.

Topic Cluster

The dawn of a new day in SEO is upon us and the old technique of one keyword per page is slowly dimensioning. Search engines are now focusing more on semantic searches, which are based on understanding the end-user’s intent.

The more senior concept of keyword stuffing is now easily flagged predominantly due to new innovative technologies, such as latent semantic indexing. This alone is a strong enough reason to focus on a main topic, followed by a break down into narrower topics and pages where required.

External Linking

If you have been refraining from linking out to external sites with strong authority, I’m afraid you’re significantly missing out by preventing Google awareness to the topic of your site. External linking directs search engine bots to that specific page. If you’re able to link out to many authority pages relevant to the topic of your website, you make your site a Hilltop Hub.

“The Hilltop algorithm is an algorithm used to find documents relevant to a particular keyword topic.”

Google and other search engines reward this type of activity by moving them up in the SERPs. Typically, it has been identified that you should have 2-3 external links per 1000 words.

Interlink Pages

Did you know that every page on your actual website has a different level of page authority? Review your site to identify the pages with weaker page authority and those falling into the 2nd or 3rd pages of the SERPs. Once you identify them, you should do the same for the “positive” pages with strong page authority and good SERP rankings.

Once you unfold this information, link the lower pages with the higher pages. The main aim of doing this is to assist in the passing of domain equity between pages. And secondly, it will make your site far easier for the search engine bots to crawl.

What most people don’t know is that you can get backlinks from many other sources beyond influences, such as Wikipedia.

It is a well know fact that backlinks are the number one way to improve your organic rankings. Established SEO specialists around the globe go to great lengths to locate good backlinks.

Before SEO became a household name, it was easy to find backlinks as it was achieved through a simple exchange of links between companies. However, when influencers became a popular dynamic online, this concept turned into a profitable business model. You can spend extensive time and resources trying to find the ideal influencer for your business to get a backlink from them. This can be rather pricey as influencer rates have increased significantly over the past 3-5 years.

What most people don’t know is that you can get backlinks from many other sources beyond influencers, such as Wikipedia. Once you’re aware of the topics and specific keywords of your site, find pages on Wikipedia related to these keywords/topics and identify any dead links. Given that dead links no longer exist, you can replace them with your own links. This sounds a lot easier than it actually is as identifying dead links is significantly more difficult than one might presume. However, there is a way you can find those dead links.  See below:

Site: [keyword] + “dead link”

Once you use the above formula you will be able to find dead links in related articles and add your backlinks. Always be sure that the linked pages content is relative to that of the Wikipedia page. If you don’t, most likely the link to your page will be removed quickly.
